He holds the advantage of having beta- tested the game before becoming trapped, giving him prior knowledge of the game layout and its combat systems, but he struggles to make attachments and prefers being a solo player. Now, he and every other player in Sword Art Online must fight to survive in a virtual world that has become all too real to them, facing not only the various monsters and traps lurking inside the game, but also the player killers that are the worst that Sword Art Online has to offer. ALO is just fun for everyone except the 3. Asuna, and a desperate Kirito trying to rescue her. In GGO, Kirito's mission is to discover how people playing a supposedly harmless game are being. Killed Off for Real. UW is another game that starts harmless at first until Kirito is trapped there and starts fighting for his sanity. Even the Caliber side- story is rather serious since Cardinal has drawn on Norse mythology for this quest, and failure results in freaking Ragnarok happening, for real. Aincrad for An Incarnating Radius. Some guilds have acronyms they also go by: Ko. Bnote Knights of Blood; DDAnote Divine Dragon Alliance; ALFnote Aincrad Liberation Force; WWFMnote Furinkazan. It derives from first letters of its translation, . ALO for ALfheim Online. OSS for Original Sword Skill. GGO for Gun Gale Online. Bo. B for Bullet of Bullets. Action Survivor: Klein and Furinkazan are this. For the most part, they are largely Overshadowed by Awesome. However, not only are they all badasses in their own right, but every member of the guild is a SAO Survivor, despite both frontlining boss fights such as the Skull Reaper and contending with the Laughing Coffin murder guild. A Darker Me: There's a group of players that go around killing other players and stealing their items. Lampshaded when Kirito remarks that online players act very different from how they would in real life. Adaptation Distillation: The anime has moments of this, simplifying the scenes of the light novel. For example, stripping . Ronye gets her own spotlight in Moon Cradle despite Kirito playing a more active role than in Mother's Rosario. Adaptation Explanation Extrication: Some in the anime, loads in the manga. Want to know how Kirito and Asuna met? Or who those people he keeps flashing back to are? Or where the term ? Read the novels or watch the anime. In the anime, the eponymous Sword Arts are this. The book goes into detail on how they're activated, their names, and their role in gameplay. The anime just has the characters mention Sword Arts on occasion and never elaborates. Adult Fear: Some Fridge Horror comes into play when you realize the amount of children that were playing the game that got trapped inside. Sure, most of them were rescued by sympathetic players, but there had to be quite a few that didn't make it. Kirito and Asuna also experience this when they witness Yui's temporary Heroic Sacrifice. Anyone who has ever played any other massive online multiplayer game knows that some of the most infuriatingly good players are children. In a video game world, you'd expect that kids wouldn't ordinarily need the help. And it's likely that, statistically speaking, they have the same potential strength as the adults. However, in a game where dying really kills you and there's no way to leave, the context is totally different. Having the kids join the battles would essentially be making them into actual child soldiers. List of Sword Art Online characters. The following is a list of characters from the light novel, anime and manga series Sword Art Online. Most of the characters are introduced as gamers who play and consequently become trapped in a virtual realitymassively multiplayer online role- playing game (VRMMORPG). The series chronicles their interactions in multiple online worlds: Sword Art Online (SAO), ALfheim Online (ALO), Gun Gale Online (GGO), and Underworld (UW). Main characters. Connolly (Heathcliff), Marc Diraison (Akihiko) (English)Akihiko Kayaba is the director and creator of the Nerve. Gear and Sword Art Online, as well as the main antagonist of the SAO arc. He traps all the players within SAO by using the Nerve. Gear to obstruct signals from the user's brain. Any in- game death or attempt at removal of the Nerve. Gear would result in the real- life death of the user. Later, it is discovered that he has been posing as Heathcliff, the leader of the Knights of the Blood Oath. Although he has the admin authority to make his avatar immortal, he is shown to be a powerful player even without his in- game immortality due to his intimate understanding of the SAO game mechanics which he himself had designed. His only goal in life was to make Aincrad a reality. He is destroyed by Kirito at the end of Volume 4, leaving behind a program that grants Kirito the World Seed. His death is his own doing since he has also rigged his own Soul Translator device to kill him when he is destroyed and transfer his soul into a digital form onto the Internet.? You just show how good that guy was by comparison to the new villain. He is the one responsible for keeping 3. Nerve. Gear victims, including Asuna, prisoner even after SAO had ended. He did this by transferring them all into ALO for experiments on human subjugation via fulldive technology. He also attempts to take over RECT Progress Inc. He displays a perverse interest in consummating this marriage while Asuna is still comatose. In ALO, he takes on the identity of Oberon the Fairy King and makes Asuna his queen, Titania. When he and Kirito finally meet, he flaunts his GM status as well as the results of his research by critically damaging Kirito by increasing Kirito's pain limit and impaling him. He is destroyed when the . Kirito then blinds and dismembers him after setting Sug. All 3. 00 victims are released from ALO, but Nobuyuki makes another attempt to attack Kazuto while he is making his way to Asuna in the real world, now blind in one eye and insane after his defeat. However, he is once again subdued by Kazuto, who puts the unarmed combat skills he had learned in SAO to useful effect. Nobuyuki is then arrested and charged for his crimes. The character was lauded as an . More than that, he is also constantly threatening to rape Asuna—both in the game and in the real world. Simply put, he has the greatest hallmark of a good villain: He is a guy you love to hate.? Maybe, but keep in mind, as a show about online interactions, demonstrating The Greater Internet Dickwad Theory is definitely in SAO's purview. He may not be a great character who's going to make anyone's . In reality, Death Gun's actual user name is Sterben and is an alternate account created by Ky. Having been forced to bare the pressure of taking over his family's hospital while bullied at school, Ky. This resulted with Ky. But Kirito manages to save Shino and Ky. Sometime after SAO, Atsushi helped Shoichi and his brother in their Death Gun scheme and was the only member of their gang to escape arrest. But six months later, Atsushi returns and attempts to kill Kazuto and Asuna in the real world. Though arrested, Atsushi came close to killing Kazuto with a succinylcholine syringe. Thrym(. But in a departure from usual NPCs, Thrym is one of few whose core programming is connected to ALO's language engine to be a more realistic character. In the game storyline, Thyrm emerged from Aflheim and used the stolen Excalibur to conquer the Hill Giants' realm of J. Thrym then uses his forces, and players he recruits on a false quest, to slaughter the native beasts to cripple the power of Ur. But as Kirito and his party realize upon taking Ur. The group find Thrym and manage to defeat him with the help of a NPC named Freyja, who was revealed to be Thor in disguise. Quinella. 3. 50 years before Kirito would enter the Underworld, Quinella was born. She was given the sacred task of studying the Sacred Arts. Soon, she learned that by killing others, one's stats could be raised, so every night she snuck out and killed the animals of the forest, which would respawn everyday anyways. She raised her stats to a ridiculously high level and decided to take control over the Underworld. Fooling people into believing she was a goddess, she created the Axiom Church and made laws to control the people. She studied the Sacred Arts intensely, trying to find a way to transcend the limit of that world, the «Life» of that world. She finds the System Control Authority command on the brink of death and immediately uses it to heal herself, restoring her beauty and «Life» to her former appearance as a youth. Secondary characters. At first thought to be a lost child in SAO, she is an artificial intelligence. Her full designation is «Mental Health – Counselling Program», MHCP version 1, codename, «Yui». Yui is shown to have a human form and a Navigation Pixie form where she is always barefoot in both forms. She was designed to monitor the emotions of players and appear at their sides to hear and help them out. However, since the moment everyone was imprisoned in Sword Art Online, she was forbidden to come in contact with the players and complete her prime directive. Unable to do anything but suffer as she monitored the emotions of the trapped players, she came upon Kirito and Asuna whose emotions stood out as a beacon of joy and peace in a sea of fear and despair. She sought them out, appearing to them as an amnesiac child whom they adopted. In the end she was nearly deleted by Cardinal, the management system of SAO, but is saved by Kirito by converting and storing her data into his own Nerve. Gear. Yui later shows up in ALO as a Private Navigation Pixie and helps Kirito along with Leafa to find Asuna. She refers to Kirito as . Kirito uses his skills and resources in the real world to construct a device for Yui to view the real world even while she is in virtual reality and gives her the ability to communicate with them. Klein (. They go their separate ways shortly after when Kirito leaves for another town to power level, while Klein remains behind to help out his less experienced friends, although he is concerned for Kirito due to his solitude and recklessness. Klein uses a katana to fight and later becomes a leader of his own guild, Fuurinkazan. He regularly meets with Kirito and his friends and occasionally joins them in quests in ALO, especially after the release of the World Seed. One of the rare beast tamers in the game. Very early in the game, she was able to tame a small dragon, Pina (. Due to her fame, many tried to get on her good side, causing her to get a bit of an inflated head. She usually stays away from the males, who try to marry her (despite the fact that she's only 1. Kirito rescued and helped Silica get the . She gained feelings for him, but once she discovers his skills, she realized that they cannot be together in the game but promise to meet again. Keiko befriends Rika at SAO Survivor School. She joins Kirito and his friends in ALO right after they meet in the real world: they often go together in quests. Sword Art Online girls (including Silica) feature in a merchandise lottery by Bandai, where they are depicted in french maid clothing with cooking utensils, with Anime News Network humorously noting that they have . Lisbeth or . Kirito commissioned Liz to forge a custom- made sword for him and accompanies her in a quest for the special ore required for the job. During the quest, she also develops feelings for Kirito. She is devastated when she finds out that Kirito is Asuna's crush. However, she finds some solace after Kirito thanks her for giving him a renewed determination to fight on and clear the game. She requests to be Kirito's exclusive blacksmith. Rika is almost very well teasing Asuna about her relationship with Kirito afterwards. At SAO Survivor School, she and Keiko get irritated when seeing Kazuto and Asuna together. Liz later becomes a regular player in ALO and frequently joins Kirito and his friends in quests and takes up the task of upgrading their equipment. Sword Art Online girls (including Lisbeth) feature in a merchandise lottery by Bandai, where they are depicted in french maid clothing with cooking utensils, with Anime News Network humorously noting that they have . Maybe it was . She was an Imp in ALO, she started dueling anyone promising an 1. Original Sword Skill (OSS) if she's defeated: due to her undefeated status she's given the title . After certain events, which include the defeat of the boss it is revealed that Yuuki has HIV/AIDS and the guild members are patients in terminal state: to test the Medicuboid device, designed supposedly by Rinko Koujiro, in care for future patients. Yuuki forms a strong bond with Asuna, in reminder of her late elder sister Aiko Konno. Yu Narukami . As long as they can open their eyes and look around, they'll see it. They'll see the truth! In the summer, he wears a light uniform. On days off, he is shown wearing a black jacket and gray turtleneck shirt along with black pants. On days off in the summer, he wears a short sleeved white collared shirt and brown pants. At the school festival while cross- dressing, he uses a female uniform with black leggings as well as a wig with long pigtails. He also has a black blazer which he is occasionally seen wearing in the manga adaptation of the game. During the other Golden- exclusive, the ski trip event, he wears a snow suit with a beanie and yellow goggles, black turtleneck and possibly a white sweater vest. On colder days in the winter, he wears a white winter coat with black and white pad scarf and matching black gloves under his school uniform. During the new epilogue, his hair style remains unchanged, but he wears a aqua v- collar shirt, gray plaid trousers and tan shoes. He also has a pair of yellow headphones around his neck, and wears gray sneakers with yellow laces. To make up for it, though, I've had my friends to help me mature. It's my companions that I draw strength from in all of this. His personality is ultimately based on the player's actions and decisions. However, when he hears Jika Net Tanaka, he describes it as a . Also, in Persona 4 Golden, the Investigation Team members comment how he doesn't talk much when equipped with the Butler Suit. His dialogue choices make him seem very neutral, as opposed to the protagonists of Persona 3, and includes some limited sense of humor along with occasional flirtatious or silly behavior. Overall, he is portrayed through his dialogue options as having a more extrovert personality than the Persona 3 protagonist. While the game portrays the protagonist as a calm and neutral individual, one scenes shows him to be also aggressive as well. In the events regarding the decision to kill Namatame, if the player made all the correct choices, the dialogue choice . This shows that, while the protagonist is calm and decisive, he has limits as to how much tolerance he has. In addition, he hardly ever shows this, as shown when the Investigation Team was surprised by his outburst at Yosuke. Seta has a pessimistic outlook on life due to his parents and having to move frequently as a result of said parents' demanding careers, but he eventually warms up as he explores friendship. Before the awakening of his Persona, Yu seemed to be emotionless and cold at times, as well as occasionally deadpan. Afterwards, however, he is shown to value the bonds of friendship between the members of the Investigation Team and is highly concerned about his friends, going to great lengths in order to help others. Fortunately as he grows closer to the group he opens up more and more, and by the end he is as unique (though still quieter) as any of the other characters. He has a dry sense of humor, and sometimes does questionable things which he thinks are funny. He also seems a bit na. His biggest insecurity is abandonment, he has the fear of losing contact with all of his friends when he moves away from them. By the end of the show, he accepts his Shadow and acknowledges that he has to accept being separated from them when the time comes. He has a sharp mind, and is able to quickly realize the trick behind the tournament that forces the group to fight one another. He deeply cares for his friends and one of the few ways to truly anger him is to threaten either them or Nanako which causes him to become very cold. He also has a great understanding of the bonds of people, which lead Aigis and Mitsuru to realize that despite their different appearances, Yu reminds them of the protagonist of Persona 3. He trusts Yosuke completely and generally understands him best out of the entire Investigation team and vice versa. This continues the theme that the anime established that in the entire Investigation Team, Yu and Yosuke are closest with each other and generally lead the team side by side, as well as discussing plans with each other on serious issues. He's confident and affable, but also strange and a little random at times. His dialogue choices during the P4 route support this, as they're noticeably more cheery and bizarre than his Persona 3 counterpart. During the group date cafe, when Mitsuru and Yukari deem him to be boyfriend material, he visibly blushes. He views himself as a weak person and gets his strength from his bonds and being accepted by others. This is shown in the anime and by his own admission in Persona Q, when he is separated from them, Yu withdraws into himself and loses the confidence he normally portrays. Igor remarks that a mystery awaits, and it is his fate to discover it. The protagonist later awakens from his subconscious, and reminiscences about his old school. On the way back, Dojima stops by the gas station, and the protagonist is welcomed by an attendant of Moel Gas Station, who offers him a job. The attendant gives the protagonist a handshake and shortly after he begins to feel somewhat sick, but dismisses it as car sickness as they go on their way. He hears a voice, telling him to follow it if he wishes to find the truth. The protagonist eventually encounters a presence, but the heavy fog makes it impossible to see the other person. The voice claims to be intrigued by the protagonist, and decides to lend him his power for the time being. Chie later tells the protagonist and Yosuke about the rumor of the Midnight Channel, and asks them to try it out. The protagonist also meets Saki Konishi, an upperclassman and Yosuke's senpai who is working at Junes. Intrigued, the protagonist touches the screen of his TV, and discovers that he can reach his hand inside. The TV pulls him in, but gets stuck instead because the TV screen was too small. He manages to pull himself out and accidentally knocks himself on the head. The protagonist tells Yosuke and Chie about how he was sucked into the TV, and the latter assume it was a weird dream. The trio goes to the electronics department of Junes and goes over the TV sets on display. The protagonist tries to re- enter the TV this time, using a wide- screen TV large enough to insert his body in. Seeing the protagonist stuck midway inside the TV, Yosuke and Chie accidentally push them in the TV, and the three fall on the Midnight Channel. Eventually, they encounter a bear named Teddie who urges them to leave. Devastated, Yosuke swears to investigate the Midnight Channel, and they conclude that the female student they witnessed on the Midnight Channel must have been her. He asks the protagonist to help him, due to his capability to enter the TV. The protagonist and Yosuke then enter the Midnight Channel, leaving Chie behind to keep her from harm. Inside the Midnight Channel, the protagonist and Yosuke once again encounter the bear, who introduces himself as Teddie. Infuriated by their presence, Teddie angrily accuses them of being responsible for . Upon learning that the protagonist and Yosuke aren't responsible, Teddie makes the pair promises to help find the culprit, and gives them a pair of glasses, allowing them to see through the fog in the Midnight Channel. The protagonist hears a voice, calling out to him to awaken his true self, and is presented with a card. Crushing it triggers the awakening of his initial Persona, Izanagi, and dispatches the Shadows. Bewildered by his power, Teddie is intrigued by the protagonist and comes to respect him. Inside, they hear an inner voice of Saki expressing her hatred towards Yosuke for being annoying, and Junes for ruining her family's business. While Yosuke is devastated by this revelation, another 'Yosuke' makes his entrance, and mocks him for hating having a boring life and wanting to be the hero that would solve the case of Saki's death. Yosuke's continuous declination of his shadow's taunts causes the other 'Yosuke' to to berserk and attack them. The protagonist defeats the shadow using his Persona, and Yosuke is forced to come to terms with his true feelings, which awakens his first Persona, Jiraiya. The protagonist and Yosuke leave the Midnight Channel and are scolded by a worried Chie in the real world. Yosuke concludes that it is an image of Yukiko Amagi, which was similar to what Yukiko wore during a TV interview. To further complicate the issue, Yukiko hasn't been showing up to the school, and Chie becomes worried. Yukiko later reveals she's been busy helping out at her family inn and has been forced to skip school. However, still worried, Yosuke suggests the protagonist to tune in the Midnight Channel tonight as well. As Yukiko's behavior in the TV was rather bizarre and out of character, Yosuke calls the protagonist, and suggests to meet up in the Junes Food Court the next morning. Along their way Chie faces herself, and receives her own Persona. The protagonist, Yosuke and Chie later create the Investigation Team dedicated to investigate the origins of the Midnight Channel and solve the bizarre murder cases. Through the team's activity within the Midnight Channel, however, they all express the same question upon the protagonist's latent skill of invoking his Persona without having to face his other self. All three of them join the Investigation Team. Despite the team's worries, they've decided to continue watching the Midnight Channel. The protagonist eventually receives the threat again. This time, however, the letter directly tells the protagonist that if he does not stop his actions, someone close to him will die. Yu tries to tell Dojima the full truth of what's been going on, but Dojima doesn't believe him in the slightest. Dojima eventually coerces the protagonist to spend a night in the police station, but at midnight, he is shocked to see Nanako's silhouette in the Midnight Channel, who is revealed to have been abducted. The Investigation Team eventually discovers the identity of Nanako's kidnapper, based on bits of information salvaged by Dojima.
